ProjectsCincinnati Park Board – Carol Ann’s Carousel at Smale Riverfront Park (2013)

Jan Brown Checco led conceptual design and developed process for the carousel in Smale Riverfront Park. Research of Cincinnati’s history as a builder of carousels revealed charming styles and movable carnival merry-go-rounds. Her discovery of the Carousel Works factory in Mansfield, Ohio, settled the styling of facades and characters to be based on those of Denzel, North America magnificent carousel fabricator. Dozens of artists, carpenters and mechanical engineers will fabricate and installed the carousel in a glass enclosure on the Ohio riverfront by spring 2015.

  • Jan designed this small-scale model with eight segments, fusing ornate Venetian styles with one of Carousel Works more typical facades. The Cincinnati carousel will have 16 segments, with scenic panels designed and painted by Jonathan Queen.
